On Monday, an Ashaiman district court took into custody one of the leaders of a civil society organization for threatening to carry out a coup. Ghana Police charged Barker-Vormawor with the crime of treason.

The court presided over by Ms Eleanor Kakra Barnes-Botchway yesterday rejected a bail application, saying the court had no jurisdiction to grant the accused bail due to the charge against him.

He has been taken into custody for the next two weeks and is expected to reappear in court on Monday, February 28, 2022.

The accused, a social media activist and one of the organizers of the “Fix The Country” movement, was arrested by the police last Friday for “threatening a coup”.

Mr Barker-Vormawor in a series of Facebook posts this week described the Ghanaian military as “useless”.

According to the police, “the post contained a clear statement of intent with a possible will to execute a coup in his declaration of intent to subvert the constitution of the Republic of Ghana”.
