A Chinese man prosecuted for racism and child exploitation was sentenced on Thursday July 20, 2023 to one year in prison by a court in Lilongwe.

Lu Ke must leave Malawi within 7 days. The Chinese arrested last year has already served his full sentence, thus justifying his immediate release.

The Chinese man was accused of filming children chanting racist slogans about them, all in Chinese, a language they did not understand, and then selling the videos on Chinese social media.

Actions condemned by the Chinese Embassy in Malawi, which in a statement expressed Beijing’s “zero tolerance” against racism.

Lu Ke ended up paying financial compensation to the victims, the amount of which has not been revealed.

He was arrested in June 2022 in Zambia, for illegal entry after fleeing Malawi. He was then extradited.
