This week in South Africa is the 2023 Africa Group III Davis Cup tournament, where many national tennis teams compete against each other for their quest to qualify for the World Qualifiers. South Africa faces Zimbabwe on Saturday in a final even though they have both already secured their spots in the Davis Cup World Group II play-offs for 2024.

The Davis Cup Group III African Qualifiers is jointly organized by Tennis South Africa (TSA) and the International Tennis Federation (ITF). It brings together the national teams of South Africa, Benin, Algeria, Namibia, Senegal, Togo, Côte d’Ivoire and Zimbabwe, who compete for their place in the global competition.

The Togo team, which had enjoyed success in Group A, suffered a loss to South Africa on Friday at the Tuks tennis courts at the University of Pretoria (3-0).

After defeating Algeria and Ivory Coast respectively on Wednesday and Thursday, the South African team emerged victorious once again from their clash against Togo yesterday.

South Africa therefore faces Group B winners Zimbabwe in the final of the Davis Cup Group III Africa tournament on Saturday, with both teams having already reached next year’s World Group II qualifiers.

Togo and Benin, who finished second in each of the tournament groups, will face off for the third and final spot in the World Group II promotion play-off.
