The administration of the Federal Government of President Muhammadu Buhari has announced the suspension of Basketball in Nigeria for two years, starting Thursday, May 12, 2022.

The ban, which takes effect immediately, follows a leadership struggle at the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF).

President Buhari’s decision was made public in a statement by Sunday Dare, Minister of Youth and Sports Development.

The International Basketball Governing Body (FIBA) was ready to ban Nigeria due to the continuing leadership crisis within the NBBF.

For the past few years, basketball has been a source of joy for sports-loving Nigerians. The men’s (D’Tigers) and women’s (D’Tigress) teams have qualified for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

With the 2-year suspension, Basketball is now locked down and the west African country cannot participate in international events either.
