In a circular note sent to its member associations on Sunday, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) presented the procedure for the draw of the qualifiers for the qualifiers for the Total Energies Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON U23.



The AFCON U23 Morocco 2023 draw will take place this Thursday, August 18, 2022 at 11 a.m. GMT in Cairo, Egypt. The ceremony will be broadcast live on CAF digital platforms.

The governing body of African football, informs that 39 African associations have entered the playoffs, the first round of which starts in September 2022.

According to the draw procedure unveiled by CAF, the 20 lowest ranked teams will play the 1st round (direct elimination by home and away match) qualifying 10 teams in the 2nd round.

The governing body also indicates that the 10 teams qualified from the 1st round + the 18 exempted from the 1st round will play the 2nd round (direct elimination by home and away match) qualifying 14 teams in the 3rd round.


Finally, the 14 teams qualified from the 2nd round will play the 3rd round (direct elimination by first leg and return match) qualifying 7 teams for the final tournament in addition to the host country Morocco automatically qualified.

CAF also recalls that the final tournament of the U23 Africa Cup of Nations will serve as the final qualifying round for the men’s Olympic football tournament.

POT A: Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania, Burkina Faso, Niger, Togo (3 teams from WAFU A + 3 teams from WAFU B)

POT B: Djibouti, Ethiopia, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania, Libya (5 CECAFA teams + 1 UNAF team)

POT C: Angola, Botswana, Eswatini, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, DR Congo (7 COSAFA teams + 1 UNIFFAC team).
