Benin was held in check by Rwanda (1-1), on Wednesday March 22, 2023 in Cotonou, on the occasion of the 3rd day of the AFCON 2023 Qualifiers.

Gernot Rohr’s men had long come up against a solid Rwandan team and were held in check by a draw. Steve Mounié (82nd) responded to the opener from Mugisha (13th).

But when you look at the match stats a little closer, you can’t help but wonder how Benin did not win this game.

On the balance of chances, Gernot Rohr, the new coach playing his first match with Benin, believes his team should have won.

“We are extremely disappointed with the result, but what I liked was the behavior of the team. We had a lot of clear chances but we didn’t score. We will analyze all this on video, because I still wonder how we could not score a second goal. We ended up with seven offensive players. We are disappointed because we did not win,” said the former Nigerian coach.

The 69-year-old will add that he was however impressed with the youngsters’ contribution to the squad and remained confident they could get a result in the second leg in four days.

For the moment, in group G led by the African champions, Senegal (6 points), Benin is last with a single point while Mozambique (4 pts) and Rwanda (2 pts), occupy respectively the second and third positions.
