Manchester United player Harry Maguire has graciously accepted an apology from Ghanaian Member of Parliament Isaac Adongo, who previously mocked Maguire during a budget debate.

“MP Issac Adongo Apology accepted. See you at Old Trafford soon,” the 30 year-old defender wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

” I now apologize to Harry Maguire for”, Adongo said on Tuesday amid the parliamentary debate on Ghana’s 2024 budget.

While praising Maguire as a “transformational footballer” and a “key player” for Manchester United, the MP continued to criticize Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia’s economic management. “As for our Maguire, he is now at the IMF, with a cup in hand,” he added.

A year ago, Mr. Adongo drew a comparison between Mr. Bawumia and Maguire, asserting that Maguire had become “the biggest threat at the centre of the Manchester United defence”. This statement was extensively circulated on social media, coinciding with a wave of criticism directed at the footballer.

England manager Gareth Southgate decried the mockery as “ridiculous treatment,” emphasizing Maguire’s unwavering commitment to the team. In a staunch defense of her son, Maguire’s mother characterized the abuse as “disgraceful” and “unacceptable.”

This week, Adongo clarified that he used Maguire’s struggles on the pitch as a metaphor for his dissatisfaction with Ghana’s economy.

The Ghanaian government’s challenges, including increased taxes and a loan from the IMF, have sparked public anger and protests over rising living costs and unemployment.

Despite the economic difficulties, Bawumia has been selected as the New Patriotic Party’s candidate for the 2024 elections, aiming to lead a “united and energized” party for Ghana’s transformation.
