Prince Harry and Meghan expected in Nigeria this month

Prince Harry, alongside his wife Meghan, is preparing for a significant journey to Nigeria this May. According to a Nigerian official, the trip concerns preparations for the next Invictus Games.
Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, the Nigerian defense spokesman, revealed that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will be engaging in talks centered around the Invictus Games. This event aim to help wounded and sick servicemembers and veterans.

While the exact arrival date is unknown, it’s expected after a service at London’s St. Paul’s Cathedral commemorating the games’ 10th anniversary.

Nigeria remains one of the nations actively participating in the Invictus Games. The country holds significance as its military continues to combat Islamic extremists in the northeastern region since 2009.

Initiated in 2014, inspired by the Warrior Games in the United States, the Invictus Games provide a platform for wounded veterans to engage in sports events akin to the Paralympics, championed by Prince Harry himself, drawing from his experiences serving as an Apache helicopter copilot gunner in Afghanistan.

Prince Harry’s itinerary in Nigeria extends beyond discussions, encompassing cultural engagements aimed at bolstering Nigeria’s involvement in the games and exploring the possibility of hosting future editions, as articulated by Gusau.

In a recent Netflix series highlighting the games, Prince Harry candidly shared his struggles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) upon returning from Afghanistan in 2012. He shed light on the emotional turmoil triggered by suppressed memories of his mother’s demise, Princess Diana, when he was 12 years old.
