With fewer than sixty days left until the commencement of the 2024 Paris Olympics, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has unveiled its most extensive refugee team ever.

Thirty-six athletes from eleven nations are set to compete across twelve sports. A significant moment of pride for the diverse group.

The team represents countries spanning Africa, Syria, Iran, Afghanistan, Venezuela, and Cuba. This embodies a symbol of resilience and hope for over 100 million displaced individuals worldwide.

According to the IOC President Thomas Bach, “Besides all the performance, it’s the emotional value, sending this symbol of hope to the more than 100 million people who, unfortunately had to migrate.”

The composition of the team reflects a meticulous selection process by the IOC, considering factors such as sporting prowess, country of origin, and gender balance.

Comprising twenty-three men and thirteen women from three continents Africa, the Americas, and Asia. The team features a mix of debutants, previous Tokyo 2020 members. It includes athletes who once competed for their native countries before seeking refuge.

In Paris, the IOC Refugee Olympic Team will proudly display its own emblem, symbolizing unity and perseverance amidst adversity.

Dubbed EOR, an acronym derived from the French term “Equipe Olympique des Réfugiés,” the team was originally established for the 2016 Rio Olympics. The refugee team initiative allows athletes to remain in contention, irrespective of their forced migration.

They were only ten athletes in Rio and grew to twenty-nine in Tokyo three years ago. The growing representation of refugee athletes underscores the significance of inclusion and diversity in international sports.

As a reminder, the 2024 Paris Olympics Games will commence on Friday, July 26, 2024. They will conclude on Sunday, August 11, 2024.
