Chancenkarte: A new way to move to Germany

Starting June 1, 2024, individuals seeking employment in Germany can apply for an Opportunity Card, known as Chancenkarte, replacing the Jobseeker Visa. This new initiative was being announced by several German Embassies across the world.

The Chancenkarte allows candidates from non-EU countries to enter Germany and look for suitable employment without needing to provide proof of a permanent job contract. The card is available to those recognized as skilled workers or who score at least six points in a designated points system. Additionally, applicants must ensure they can support themselves financially during their stay.

The Opportunity Card simplifies the process of finding work in Germany. It will allow applicants to work without undergoing a lengthy recognition procedure. To be eligible, candidates must have at least two years of vocational training or university degree. Sufficient knowledge of either German (A1 level) or English (B2 level).

Holders of the Chancenkarte can take a two-week trial job or a part-time job (up to 20 hours a week). The card permits a one-year stay in Germany, with a focus on securing employment. This stay can be extended by up to two additional years upon application at the local Foreigners’ Registration Office.

The points system to qualify for the Opportunity Card assesses various criteria. Applicants must score a total of six points. Meeting basic requirements such as language skills, at least two years of vocational training or a university degree recognized in their country of origin and financial stability.

Additional criteria in the points system include language proficiency, professional experience, age, and connection to Germany. The age criterion refers to the applicant’s age at the time of application.
