Marc Brys has been dismissed as head coach of Cameroon without having overseen a single game, following a heated argument with Samuel Eto’o, president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot).
In response, Fecafoot’s executive committee held an emergency meeting. Subsequently, Martin Ndtoungou, 66, was appointed as the interim coach of the team.
A statement from Fecafoot cited several reasons for Brys’ dismissal, including “disrespectful comments,” “an outright refusal to collaborate,” and “inappropriate behavior” by both Brys and his assistants.
The Belgian football manager had been appointed in early April by Cameroon’s sports ministry. However, Fecafoot expressed “great astonishment” at this decision, claiming it was made “unilaterally.”
Eto’o reportedly prepared his own list of more prominent candidates for the coaching role. Eto’o was notably absent during Brys’ unveiling as the coach.
The two met at Fecafoot’s offices in Yaoundé on Tuesday, where a video shared on social media showed a heated argument before Marc Brys abruptly departed.
Samuel Eto’o, a former star for Barcelona Eto’o has been Fecafoot president since December 2021. He was also seen in a dispute with an official from the sports ministry.
The sports ministry has yet to comment on this recent development amid the ongoing power struggle with Fecafoot.
This comes just ahead of next month’s qualifiers for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Cameroon is set to host Cape Verde on June 8 and will then travel to Angola on June 11.
Coach Ndtoungou is expected to announce his squad for these matches on Thursday.
Cameroon currently leads Group D with four points from two games. The group winners will secure a place in the 2026 FIFA World cup. The tournament will take place from June 11 to July 19 2026. It will be jointly hosted by 16 cities in Canada, Mexico and the USA.
