World cup (Q): Qatar overturn India with controversial goal

In a dramatic and contentious match, Qatar defeated India 2-1, eliminating them from the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. The deciding moment came from a controversial goal that raised many eyebrows due to its questionable legality.

India, aiming for their first-ever advancement to the third round of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, faced the 34th-ranked team, Qatar, with high hopes. At the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium, India took the lead with Lallianzuala Chhangte’s goal in the first half.

They managed to hold their advantage until the 73rd minute. The turning point came in a highly debated manner. Yousef Aymen scored from close range, but there was significant doubt about whether the ball had gone out of play moments before.

A video clip circulating on X showed Indian goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu failing to secure the ball, which seemed to have rolled out for a corner. However, Qatar’s players quickly pulled it back into play, and the officials did not notice that the ball had entirely crossed the line.

As Qatar celebrated their equalizer, Indian players were visibly confused and frustrated, appealing to the referee and linesman to review the incident. Despite their protests, the officials upheld their decision. Eventually, the game ended with Qatar’s victory (2-1).

One social media post highlighted the controversy, stating, “That’s Really an Unfair and Biased Decision from the Referee.” Another commentator described it as a “MASSIVE BLUNDER FROM THE REFEREES,” criticizing the decision to allow a goal that should not have stood due to the ball going out of play.

India’s commendable effort against the reigning AFC Asian Cup champions, despite the controversial outcome, will likely remain a proud moment. They displayed resilience and skill against a formidable opponent. Even as their journey in the World Cup qualifiers came to a premature end.
