Coco Gauff, the 2023 US Open champion, is set to make her Olympic debut in a special way by being named the USA’s female flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games on July 26.
At just 20 years old, Gauff will lead the US tennis team, making history as the first U.S. tennis player and the youngest American to carry the flag during the Opening Ceremony. Previously, gymnast Simone Biles carried the flag at the Closing Ceremony of the 2016 Rio Olympics at the age of 19.
Basketball icon LeBron James, recently named the US men’s flag bearer, will join Gauff. This marks his fourth Olympic appearance.
In a statement released by the USOPC, Gauff expressed her astonishment and pride: “I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the Opening Ceremony. I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is – at a moment where we can bring athletes and fans together from around the world.”
Gauff’s Olympic debut follows an impressive career, including her victory at the 2023 US Open and her doubles title at the 2024 French Open with Katerina Siniaková.
Currently ranked No. 2 in the world, Coco Gauff will compete in singles, women’s doubles, and potentially mixed doubles, aiming for medals in all three events.
As a reminder, the 2024 Paris Olympic Games will kick off on July 26 and conclude on August 11.
