Shock defeat for Manchester City as Al Hilal advances at Club World Cup

In one of the most dramatic upsets in recent football history, Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal defeated reigning European champions Manchester City 4–3 in the Round of 16 of the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup 2025. The match, played in New York, sent shockwaves through the football world—and featured a standout performance from African players.

Among the heroes of the night was Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly, whose towering header in extra time gave Al Hilal a temporary lead. The former Napoli and Chelsea centre-back led the backline with authority and experience, shutting down several City threats and inspiring his teammates throughout.

In goal, Moroccan international Yassine Bounou, also known as “Bono”, delivered a world-class performance with 10 decisive saves. His calm presence and quick reflexes helped deny Erling Haaland and Phil Foden multiple times. The Atlas Lions’ goalkeeper continues to solidify his place as one of the top African keepers on the global stage.

Al Hilal, trailing early after Bernardo Silva’s goal, responded with energy and resilience. Brazilian forwards Marcos Leonardo and Malcom scored crucial goals.

With the victory, Al Hilal now advances to face Fluminense in the quarter-finals, while Manchester City heads home, having missed out on what many believed would be a straightforward path to the final.

As the tournament progresses, eyes will now turn to whether the African contingent at Al Hilal can carry the dream forward—perhaps all the way to the title.
