Burkina Faso’s President, Captain Ibrahim Traoré, officially reopened the newly renovated August 4 Stadium on Monday, marking a major milestone in the country’s efforts to revitalize its sports infrastructure.
The stadium, a national landmark and key venue for sporting events, has undergone significant upgrades over the past four years. Under President Traoré’s leadership, the pace of the renovation project accelerated considerably, according to the Minister of Sports, Youth and Employment, Roland Somda.
“Thanks to the President’s clear vision and firm directives, this emblematic jewel of our national sport has reached a decisive turning point,” Minister Somda stated during the ceremony.
The renovations included the overhaul of the playing field, spectator stands, locker rooms, lighting, and sound systems. Officials confirmed that the stadium now meets international standards, reflecting the government’s broader ambition to restore the prestige of Burkina Faso’s sports sector.

The reopening event featured a range of performances and symbolic gestures. Highlights included parachute displays, musical performances, and the unveiling of the national football team’s new official jersey, named Victory Ditanyè. The jersey, inspired by the national flag, features 65 stars in celebration of the country’s 65th independence anniversary.
To commemorate the occasion, a gala football match was held between a team of former African international players and members of Burkina Faso’s defense and security forces. The friendly encounter ended in a 1-1 draw.
Describing the stadium as a “symbol of our unity and resilience,” Minister Somda emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in preserving public infrastructure. “What is built through collective effort must be protected by collective consciousness,” he said, before declaring the August 4 Stadium officially reopened “on behalf of His Excellency Captain Ibrahim Traoré, President of the Republic and foremost supporter of the Étalons across all disciplines.”
However, it is important to note that as of now, Burkina Faso does not have any stadium approved by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for hosting official international matches. The national team, the Étalons, continues to play its home games abroad.
