The President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, on Friday announced two potential candidates for the next leader of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Dr Owusu Afriyie Akoto, Minister of Agriculture and his colleague at the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, are said to have the ambition to become the flagbearer of NPP in 2024.
The president made the announcement in a teasing way on Friday October 1, 2021, as he introduced his team at Manhyia Palace, the seat of Asantehene, during his tour in Ashanti region.
“Nana let me introduce my team,…This is your grandson Dr Afriyie Akoto, my Agric Minister who wants to become the president, ”said Akufo-Addo
“Nana, this is Alan Kyeremanten, he has been vying for my seat for a very long time, a very workaholic minister,” he added.
As a reminder, the ruling party, NPP has barred its members from campaigning ahead of the presidential primaries next year.
