The best African player of the season will be known on July 21, during the CAF Awards 2022 ceremony scheduled in Morocco. Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah and Ryad Marhez are considered the favourites.
Canceled for the last two years due to the coronavirus pandemic, the CAF Awards ceremony will take place soon: July 21, 2022 in the Cherifian kingdom, two days before the start of the final phase of the Women African Cup of Nations planned in the same country.
The African Football Confederation (CAF) has not yet published the list of nominees.
However, some experts believe they know the names of the favorites. “The most prestigious award, the title of African Player of the Year, is obviously eagerly awaited even if CAF has not given the list of nominees a month before the ceremony. The title holder, the Senegalese Sadio Mané remains the big favorite after his coronation at the CAN with Senegal last February”, underlines rfi.
According to the continental body, “The winners will be decided by the votes of the captains and coaches of the member associations, the technical study group of CAF, the selected journalists, and the Legends of African football”.
The rules of the CAF Awards change with players now judged on the past season and no longer on the performance of the calendar year. The period taken into account will therefore be from September 2021 to June 2022.
