Due to the postponement of the AFCON 2023 in January / February 2024 and the desire of the 5 African selections qualified for the 2022 World Cup to prepare the competition as well as possible, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) formalized on Sunday the postponement of the 3rd and 4th round of the AFCON 2023 qualifiers , initially scheduled for next September.

“The Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football has approved the modification of the calendar for the qualification phase of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Côte d’Ivoire 2023. This decision follows the commitment of the Executive Committee to offer more preparation time for the African nations qualified for the FIFA World Cup, scheduled for November and December 2022”, indicated the pan-African body before communicating the new calendar.

As a result, round 3 and 4 of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers originally scheduled for September 2022 will now take place from March 20 to 28, 2023.

The fifth day will take place from June 12 to 20, 2023, and the sixth day from September 4 to 12, 2023.

The African countries qualified for the Qatar 2022 World Cup are Ghana, Morocco, Cameroon, Tunisia and Senegal, whose coach Aliou Cissé had also called for the postponement of the qualifiers for AFCON 2023.
