Napoli, a Serie A club, will no longer target African internationals. This is announced by Aurelio De Laurentiis, its president. He is taking this decision because of the periodicity of the African Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The organization of the final phase of the continental competition, often in winter, in the middle of the season, has repercussions on the results of Napoli. Reason why he takes this radical decision.

“Don’t talk to me about African footballers anymore. I will not take any more, as long as the African Cup of Nations is organized in the middle of the season, ”clarifies Mr. Laurentiis during an interview with Wall Street Italia, an economic media.

He made it clear that he would accept African players unless they agree not to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations.

“Or they sign a waiver giving up their right to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations tournaments or between AFCON and the championships in South America” he added.

Napoli currently have Victor Osimhen from Nigeria, Andre-Franck Zambo Anguissa from Cameroon and Algerian Adam Ounas in their squad.

African internationals who regularly respond to calls from their national team.

Aurelio de Laurentiis, 73, businessmen, has presided over the destiny of the Campania club since 2004.

When he arrived, the club was in the third division. He has made it one of the big teams in Serie A. Laurentiss said that he is not ready to give up his place.
