For the first time, the Moroccan women’s team reached the round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup, after beating Colombia on Thursday. However, the South Americans progress as Group H winners.

Anissa Lahmari scored the only goal for the Atlas Lionesses via a rebound after captain Ghizlane Chebbak’s penalty was saved late in the first half.

Germany’s failure to beat South Korea means Morocco are in the round of 16. Germany, double champion, was eliminated in a shock this Thursday following a draw (1-1) against South Korea.

It’s the first time in Germany’s history that they haven’t reached the knockout stages of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Morocco thus became the last and third African nation to stay the course in the tournament after the qualifications of Nigeria and South Africa. In the round of 16, Morocco will face France on August 8.
