The first round of qualifiers for the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) came to an end on Tuesday evening with the last matches of the return leg. This round witnessed several top teams being eliminated.
After taking a commanding lead in the first leg, Tunisia, Togo, Ghana, and Guinea confirmed their dominance over their opponents. Having won 7-0 in the first leg, the Togolese women completed the job at home with a 6-0 victory over the modest Djibouti team. The Black Queens also displayed their strength with a win over the Rwandan Amavubi.
Cameroon, four-time finalists of the TotalEnergies Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, will not play in next year’s tournament in Morocco after being eliminated by Kenya on Tuesday.
Despite a 2-1 victory in the first leg, Algeria was held to a 1-1 draw this Tuesday. However, this result was enough to advance the Green Team to the next round. In contrast, the Cameroonians and Ivorians were eliminated in the first round despite their first-leg victories.
Senegal have secured their place in the second round of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco 2024 Qualifiers after a hard fought 2-1 away victory over Mozambique on Monday to advance to the next round of qualifiers with a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.
