A Ghanaian football fan is said to be under custody in Côte d’Ivoire for violently assaulting Chris Hughton, the coach of the Black Stars. The incident unfolded yesterday at the Ghana national team’s hotel, immediately following their defeat to Cape Verde (2-1) in the ongoing 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, as reported by Saddick Adams, a fellow journalist.
The unnamed fan reportedly attempted to physically assault the coach but was swiftly restrained by some Ghanaian diplomats. Security measures were promptly enacted, ensuring the safety of Chris Hughton, while the suspect was promptly handed over to the Ivorian police, who will determine the appropriate course of action.
The bitter taste of the loss to Cape Verde has left emotions running high. Addressing the media in a post-match press conference, Chris Hughton expressed profound sadness and disappointment, underscoring the imperative of a positive outcome in the upcoming clash against Egypt.
“We are deeply saddened and disappointed by this result. It’s a bitter defeat. Our immediate focus is regrouping. With Egypt on the horizon, we have an obligation to deliver results. The mental resilience of the players needs attention,” remarked the 65-year-old coach.

The combined setback, coupled with Egypt’s draw, sets the stage for a highly charged encounter on January 18 between the Black Stars and the Pharaohs. Moreover, Cape Verde has the chance to secure qualification against Mozambique, promising heightened drama and emotions in the days ahead.
