AFCON 2023: Egypt’s unlikely qualification, Ghana’s disappointment

Egypt secured a miraculous qualification after a 2-2 draw against Cape Verde during the third matchday in Group B of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations. Meanwhile, Ghana faced elimination after being held to a 2-2 draw by Mozambique.

Group B witnessed a remarkable scenario as Egypt advanced to the Round of 16 without winning a single match. The powerhouse Egypt team, teetering on the edge of an early exit, initially trailed against Cape Verde with a goal from Tavares (45+1) but managed to equalize in stoppage time (90+9) through goals from Trezguet (50) and Mohamed (90+2). Despite the challenges, Egypt’s favor with the football gods secured their qualification for the Round of 16 with 3 points.

On the flip side, Ghana’s Black Stars find themselves in a precarious position with minimal chances of advancing after a missed opportunity against Mozambique (2-2). Despite holding a 2-0 lead against Mozambique, the Ghanaians lost control and conceded equalizers in stoppage time through a penalty by Catamo (91+1) and a header from Reinildo (90+4).

The unexpected turn of events included Jordan Ayew successfully converting two penalties (15th and 70th), and his elder brother equaling the record for most matches played (36) in the Africa Cup of Nations, entering the game in the early second half.

With only 2 points and sitting in third place, Ghana faces an uphill battle to reach the Round of 16, barring a highly improbable turnaround. This setback adds to the disappointment for the Ghanaians following their struggles in the 2021 AFCON.
