Cameroon – AFCON disappointment: Eto’o considers stepping down

Renowned Cameroonian football figure, Samuel Eto’o, is contemplating stepping down from his role as the head of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot) following the disappointing performance of the national team at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Eto’o revealed his intention to resign during an executive committee meeting convened on Monday, February 5, 2024, as he submitted his resignation.

The decision to consider resignation comes in the wake of the Indomitable Lions’ lackluster showing at the ongoing AFCON tournament in Ivory Coast. Despite concerted efforts, the team, under the stewardship of Rigobert Song, suffered elimination in the round of 16 at the hands of Nigeria, with a scoreline of 2-0.

The former footballer implored committee members to deliberate conscientiously on the matter. However, subsequent discussions led to unanimous agreement within the committee to reject Eto’o’s resignation and reaffirm their confidence in his leadership. A subsequent press release emphasized the committee’s commitment to the continued reconstruction and development of Cameroonian football, aligning with the strategic agenda established during the December 2021 General Assembly.

“At the end of discussions and subsequent deliberations, the members of the Executive Committee decided to maintain their current mandates and thus unanimously rejected the President’s resignation thereby renewing their confidence in him to continue with the same spirit of reconstruction and development of Cameroon football at all levels as envisaged in his plan,” read the press release.

Since assuming leadership of the federation, the former FC Barcelona striker has faced several challenges to his tenure. However , the 42 year-old has managed to retain his position thus far.

This marks the second AFCON in which Cameroon is participating under the leadership of Rigobert Song alongside his teammate Eto’o. The previous edition, hosted in their country, was won by the Teranga Lions of Senegal.
