Key decisions taken for Senegal’s 2024 presidential election

On February 27, 2024, Senegal’s national dialogue reached an important moment as leaders deliberated on critical decisions regarding Karim Wade’s candidacy and the timing of the upcoming presidential election.

Initially, there were objections from the Constitutional Council regarding potential dual nationality issues raised by MP and candidate Thierno Alassane Sall. However, the commission ultimately gave its approval for Karim Wade’s candidacy. Notably, the commission also announced a reevaluation of previously rejected candidates, offering them a fresh opportunity to participate.

This decision not only extends a chance to previously sidelined candidates but also ensures the inclusion of the 19 candidates already endorsed by the Constitutional Council, providing voters with a diverse selection.

Additionally, discussions revolved around setting the election date, with June 2, 2024, proposed by the commission, though the final decision rests with President Macky Sall. Furthermore, there’s a proposal for an amnesty law scheduled for deliberation in the National Assembly on Thursday, February 29, 2024.

Originally slated for February, the presidential election faced a postponement to year-end by President Macky Sall, igniting strong opposition and sparking violent protests. However, the Constitutional Council ultimately disagreed with the presidential decision and suggested a revised, closer election date.
