A United Airlines flight encountered a harrowing ordeal necessitating an emergency landing in California, triggered by the startling detachment of a tire midflight, subsequently causing damage to multiple vehicles in a San Francisco parking lot.

The unsettling incident transpired on Thursday at approximately 11:24 a.m. local time, shortly after the Boeing 777 had departed from San Francisco International Airport en route to Japan. With 235 passengers and 14 crew members on board, the passenger plane embarked on its journey, only to face a precarious situation as video footage captured one of its six wheels detaching and plummeting during takeoff.

Redirected to Los Angeles International Airport, the aircraft approached with fire engines on standby. Fortunately, the plane executed a safe landing, coming to a halt around two-thirds down the runway before being towed away, as confirmed by LAX airport officials.

Remarkably, there were no reported injuries amidst the chaos, reassured airport spokesman Doug Yakel in an official statement. Nevertheless, images from the scene depicted severe damage inflicted upon numerous cars.

Prompted by the incident, the Federal Aviation Administration immediately launched an investigation. United Airlines expressed gratitude towards their pilots and flight attendants for their adept handling of the situation, emphasizing their commitment to collaborating with affected vehicle owners.

“We’re grateful to our pilots and flight attendants for their professionalism in managing this situation,” stated United Airlines in an official release. “We will work with customers as well as with the owners of the damaged vehicles in SFO to ensure their needs are addressed.”

Aviation experts, including former Delta Air Lines chief pilot Alan Price, sought to allay concerns, affirming the rarity of such incidents. “In aviation, we never want to have single points of failure if they can be avoided, and this is a case in point,” remarked Price to the Associated Press.
