As Senegal prepares to inaugurate its fifth president, the West African nation braces for a historic moment as Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the newly elected leader, challenges tradition with his polygamous marriage, introducing not one, but two First Ladies.
Marie Khone Faye and Absa Faye are poised to share the spotlight as the first and second wives of President-elect Bassirou Diomaye Faye. While Marie Khone Faye, a devoted Christian and mother of four, embodies integrity and familial devotion, Absa Faye, a Muslim of elegance and grace, brings her own unique presence to the forefront.

Their inclusion in the presidential narrative reflects Senegal’s rich cultural tapestry, where polygamy remains a deeply ingrained tradition. This historic moment not only challenges societal norms but also celebrates the diversity and complexity of Senegalese identity.
As the nation eagerly anticipates the inauguration of its new leader, all eyes are on these two remarkable women, poised to redefine the role of First Lady in Senegal’s political landscape.

Bassirou Diomaye Faye, born in 1980 in Ndiaganiao, Thiès region, and holding a Master’s degree in Law from École nationale d’administration (ENA), embarked on his journey to presidency from humble beginnings. His career path led him to the General Directorate of Taxes and Domains in 2007, where fate intertwined his trajectory with that of Ousmane Sonko.
In Senegal’s 2024 presidential election, Bassirou Diomaye Faye secured more than 54 percent of the votes, according to the Dakar appeals court.
