Malcolm Barcola joins FC Paços de Ferreira in Portugal

Malcolm Barcola, the 25-year-old Togolese goalkeeper, has signed with FC Paços de Ferreira, a team competing in Portugal’s second division for the 2024/2025 season. This move marks an important step in Barcola’s career, with aspirations to help his new club achieve promotion to the top tier.

Barcola’s addition to FC Paços de Ferreira is the team’s second signing for the upcoming season. After finalizing his transfer, Barcola expressed his excitement and eagerness for the challenge ahead. “I am very happy to be here, and my family shares this joy. I aim to have a fantastic season,” Barcola shared.

Addressing the club’s supporters, Barcola conveyed his commitment and optimism: “I always strive to give my best for the club, and I hope we can make our way back to the Primeira Liga.”

Barcola’s career began in France, primarily with Olympique Lyonnais, where he developed through their youth ranks. He eventually made his professional debut with Lyon’s B team, showcasing his potential as a promising goalkeeper.

In the 2022/2023 season, Barcola ventured abroad for the first time, joining Tuzla City in Bosnia-Herzegovina. This experience provided him with valuable international exposure and helped him hone his skills in a different competitive environment.

Though born in France, Malcolm Barcola holds Togolese nationality and has become a key player for Togo’s national team. With 21 appearances for the senior team, he has been instrumental in their campaigns for the 2022 World Cup and the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Barcola’s arrival in Portugal coincides with the recent resignation of Paulo Duarte, the former coach of Togo’s national team. Despite Duarte’s departure, the ties between Togo and Portugal remain strong, with Barcola’s move being a significant link. Additionally, another Togolese player, Kévin Boma, is expected to join Estoril Praia in Portugal’s top division soon.
