Brazil to host the African Diaspora Conference in the Americas

Salvador, Brazil, will be the venue for the African Diaspora Conference in the Americas from August 29 to 31, 2024. The event, organized by the African Union and the Government of Togo, is being held in collaboration with Brazil’s Federal Government and the State of Bahia, with support from the Federal University of Bahia and the Brazil-Africa Institute.

According to statement released by the Brazilian government on Friday, “this event aims to strengthen African roots around the world and to establish greater dialogue between representatives of the State and civil society of the countries of the African Union and the Americas”.

Brazil, home to the largest Afro-descendant population outside Africa and with two decades of experience in promoting racial equality, was invited by the African Union High Committee on the Decade of African Roots and Diaspora to host the event.

The conference will bring together experts, researchers, cultural leaders, and representatives from both the public and private sectors. The discussions will focus on key themes such as Pan-Africanism, memory, restitution, reparations, and reconstruction. Participation is by invitation only, limited to delegates from the African Union and the Americas. The civil society segment will run on August 29 and 30, followed by the government segment on August 31.

This gathering will also serve as a preparatory step for the 9th Pan-African Congress. This edition will take place in Togo from October 29 to November 2, 2024. The Congress will focus on the theme: “Renewal of Pan-Africanism and Africa’s Role in the Reform of Multilateral Institutions: Mobilizing Resources and Reinventing Itself to Act.”
