England – Walsall add firepower with loan deal for Reyes Cleary

Walsall have completed the loan signing of 20-year-old forward Reyes Cleary from West Bromwich Albion for the remainder of the season. The highly-rated prospect becomes the Saddlers’ eighth summer signing as they look to build on their perfect start in League Two.

Walsall, under head coach Mat Sadler, have won their opening two games against Morecambe and Swindon, keeping clean sheets in both encounters. Cleary’s arrival is seen as a very useful addition to maintain their attacking momentum.

Cleary, who penned a new one-year contract with the Baggies last month with an option for an additional year, brings significant promise to the squad. Although he has only made seven senior appearances for West Bromwich Albion, his impressive record of 19 goals for the club’s Under-21 side last season highlights his goal-scoring prowess.

Head coach Mat Sadler expressed his excitement about Cleary’s arrival, noting the forward’s versatility and goal-scoring ability. “He’s a very good finisher, very direct, and wants to get at people,” said Sadler. “He gives us a different attacking outlet, which is crucial in being able to beat teams in multiple ways.”

For Reyes Cleary, the move represents an important step in his development. “It’s good to play Premier League 2, but I need to start doing it against men in real football because that’s the only way I’m going to get better,” he said.

Cleary’s talent hasn’t gone unnoticed at the international level. In March 2023, he earned his first England U19 call-up and made his debut in a UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifier against Iceland.

Walsall’s next challenge is a trip to Tranmere Rovers this Saturday.
