Football stars expected in Adebayor’s farewell event in Togo

Former Togo national team captain, Emmanuel Adebayor, is set to officially hang up his boots . The celebrated striker announced on Tuesday that he will host a three-day event in Lomé, Togo, culminating in a testimonial match at the Kégué Stadium. Adebayor’s event is scheduled for October 2024.

“Experience three days of activities and a grand gala match at the Kégué Stadium. Joy and emotions to be shared with you all from October 25 to 27, 2024,” Adebayor, also known as SEA, shared in a statement.

Reports reveal that Adebayor has invited several football legends to participate in the testimonial match, including the likes of Augustine Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Samuel Eto’o, Abedi Pelé, and Didier Drogba.

Additionally, renowned European football stars such as 2005 Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldinho and former Arsenal icon Thierry Henry are also expected to grace the occasion.

Adebayor’s illustrious football career spanned 21 years, coming to an unofficial halt after his departure from Turkish club İstanbul Başakşehir in 2020. He played for some of the world’s biggest clubs, including AS Monaco, Arsenal, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur, and even had a brief loan spell at Real Madrid.

The Togolese star officially announced his retirement in 2023 after parting ways with local club Semassi without featuring in any match over two years.

Adebayor’s legacy in Togolese football is profound. He scored 32 goals in 87 appearances for the national team, playing a crucial role in Togo’s historic qualification for their first and only FIFA World Cup in 2006. In 2008, during his tenure at Arsenal, he was crowned African Footballer of the Year, despite Togo missing out on the African Cup of Nations that same year.
