Como signs former Barcelona star Sergi Roberto on free transfer

Italian club Como announced on Friday the signing of Sergi Roberto, who has joined the newly promoted Serie A side on a two-year contract.

After departing Barcelona this summer following 18 years of dedicated service, including his time in the club’s academy, the veteran midfielder finds a new challenge at Como.

Roberto’s arrival is largely credited to the influence of Cesc Fabregas, the current head coach of Como, who played a major role in securing the deal. With this acquisition, Como has now made 16 signings during the summer transfer window.

Sergi Roberto, 32, made 373 appearances for Barcelona, scoring 19 goals, including the dramatic winner in the 2017 Champions League last-16 tie against Paris Saint-Germain. On August 11, 2024, Barcelona officially announced his departure from the club.

During his illustrious career at Barcelona, Roberto amassed an impressive collection of trophies, including two Champions League titles, seven La Liga championships, six Copa del Rey victories, and two Club World Cups. Barcelona highlighted his versatility, noting that he spent much of his time playing at right-back.

Roberto, who earned 11 caps for Spain, last represented his country in 2021. He captained Barcelona during the 2023-24 season, with his departure confirmed after his contract expired at the end of June.
