The Cameroonian football legend Samuel Eto’o was honored this week in Lisbon, Portugal at the Web Summit, the world’s most influential tech event.

The former Indomitable Lions forward received the “Web Summit Innovation in Sport” award for his involvement on and off the pitch in promoting sport on the African continent.

After a fully virtual 2020 edition due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Web Summit, a large gathering of all players in the digital economy, is back in person in Lisbon, Portugal from November 1 to 4.


Described by Forbes magazine as “the best technology conference on the planet,” the Web Summit is the industry’s premier event.

For the same occasion, the star was praised for his involvement in the promotion of sport on the African continent.

Proud of the recognition he received, Samuel Eto’o joined his Instagram account to express his joy.

“What an honour! So grateful to be the recipient of the Web Summit Innovation in Sport Award… I hope to continue to change the lives of young people in Cameroon and across Africa”, he wrote in a post on social media.
