Togolese football legend Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor has criticized European clubs for refusing to release players for the upcoming AFCON due to the COVID-19 variant, Omicron.
The former Real Madrid player has criticized European clubs for their decision to prevent players from responding to their country’s call for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations which will kick off in Cameroon on January 9.
“There is no coach in the world that can prevent me from playing at the AFCON. It’s disgusting that some persons are trying to prevent the African Players from playing at the AFCON.” Adebayor recently said during an interview with the Cameroonian journalist, Njie Enow.

This reaction is one of many interventions after the Association of European Clubs (ECA) submitted a petition to FIFA on the release of African players before the competition.
The association is advocating for the good health of players amid the rapid spread of the coronavirus variant, Omicron. Moreover, the clubs do not wish to release players for the AFCON due to the quarantine measures on their return.
Meanwhile, European clubs are expected to release invited players from December 27 to their various national teams in accordance with the rules ahead of the continental competition.
