The Senegalese Head of State Macky Sall has just surprised his opponents in his speech on Monday, July 03, 2023 with the announcement of his desire not to take part in the next presidential election.
At the head of the Republic of Senegal for more than 11 years, Macky Sall kept the suspense for several months on his candidacy for the presidency of 2024.
“My long and carefully considered decision is not to be a candidate in the next election of February 25, 2024. And this even if the Constitution gives me the right to do so”, he promised in his long-awaited speech this Monday evening.
The president was suspected of intending to run for a third presidential term, particularly following the imprisonment of his main opponent, Ousmane Sonko, accused of rape.
The situation has also sparked multiple violent protests in the capital Dakar in recent weeks. Macky Sall says although he is supported by the diaspora for an additional term as the supreme magistracy of his country, he prefers not to run for the presidential election next year.
