Attempted coup in Niger: the European Union is concerned

After the reaction of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the European Union also comments on the current situation in Niger where the Presidential Guard has arrested the Head of State.

Reports indicate that presidential guards are detaining President Mohamed Bazoum and blockaded his residence, as well as key ministries.

“Very concerned about the current events in Niamey. The EU condemns any attempt to destabilize democracy and threaten the stability of Niger,” said Josep Borell, the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs.

The EU therefore supported with the statements made by the President of Nigeria, Bola Tinubu on behalf of ECOWAS.

No shots were fired and it is unclear whether this was an attempt by the presidential guard to seize power.

The president’s office tweeted that the guards tried unsuccessfully to enlist the support of the military in their “anti-Republican” efforts.

The landlocked West African state has seen four coups since its independence in 1960, as well as numerous coup attempts. The country’s last coup took place in February 2010, overthrowing President Mamadou Tandja.
