In the heart of the 34th 2023 Total Energie Africa Cup of Nations or AFCON 2024 , a tournament synonymous with the unity, festivity, and hospitality of Africa, a compelling narrative unfolds that goes beyond the boundaries of football. The richness of the event lies not only in the captivating displays on the field but also in the profound lessons etched into its tapestry.
Jacques Ognadon Assogba, one of our accredited journalists for the tournament, has masterfully captured moments that transcend mere scorelines and celebrations, unveiling a profound commitment to the Ivorian spirit of “Akwaba” or welcoming. Amidst the jubilation, attention is drawn to a poignant image, spotlighting a 13-year-old boy named D. Mohamed, who courageously defies physical challenges to embody the essence of AFCON.
The young boy takes center stage in this uplifting tale. Serving as a ball collector and flag carrier during the tournament, his journey becomes a testament to the resilience and passion that characterize the AFCON 2024 experience. He shared with us his dream of becoming a professional footballer, a dream that surpasses the limitations imposed by his physical condition.

“I also want to play football like my mates who have two legs,” Mohamed passionately expressed, his determination echoing across the Stade Olympique d’Ebimpé. Despite his amputation, Mohamed has been enrolled in the Espérance de Koumassi training center since childhood, excelling as a striker. His radiant smile and unwavering commitment redefine the very essence of what it means to be a footballer.

These details were confirmed by Coulibaly Doh P. Oumar, the leader of flag carriers at AFCON, who revealed that he knew Mohamed since he was around 6 years old. Oumar expressed Mohamed’s desire to become a professional footballer or a football coach, highlighting his love for freestyle akin to Titi Kone. Mr. Oumar recounted placing Mohamed on the team for ball collection and flag parade, where Mohamed worked even harder than some who preceded him. Oumar disclosed that Mohamed faced his handicap at the age of 3, playing marbles in his courtyard when a motorcycle accidentally ran over his foot, leading to the amputation of a part of that limb.
“People find his situation deplorable. But for him, he has no handicap. He says he will do everything he wants to do despite it all,” Coulibaly told AfrikPage in an exclusive interview.

Making “AFCON 2024 more than just a sporting event”
D. Mohamed’s image has not only touched the hearts of those present at AFCON but has also gone viral, with internet users applauding his spirit and determination. Assogba, a Togolese photographer also known as “Oni Photography,” emphasized the profound lessons embedded in Mohamed’s story. “I’ve been deeply moved by the commitment of this young boy. Football has become an integral part of our culture, and Mohamed exemplifies the spirit that makes AFCON more than just a sporting event,” Jacques stated.
The narrative extends beyond the football pitch, intertwining with the overarching theme of hospitality that defines the Ivorian nation. The commitment to “Akwaba” becomes a collective endeavor, witnessed in countless acts of kindness and warmth displayed by the Ivorian people throughout the tournament.

As Mohamed proudly carries the banner of hope and determination onto the pitch, his story becomes emblematic of the triumph of the human spirit. AFCON 2023 unfolds not just as a football spectacle but as a transformative experience, where lessons of resilience, inclusivity, and determination are etched into the collective memory of a continent. In a world often divided, AFCON 2023 serves as a reminder that the beautiful game has the power to unite, inspire, and redefine societal norms.
