Senegal : Diomaye and Sonko, from prison to leadership

Bassirou Diomaye Faye, a prominent left-wing pan-Africanist, made waves by appointing Ousmane Sonko as Prime Minister on Tuesday, marking a pivotal moment in Senegal’s political landscape. The duo, despite facing obstacles, emerged victorious in their quest to reshape the nation’s leadership, even after enduring imprisonment just weeks before the 2024 presidential election.

Sonko, aged 49, has been a vocal critic of former President Macky Sall for the past three years, founding the Pastef Party, which, though dissolved last July, remains active as a symbol for Faye and Sonko. He enjoys considerable popularity, particularly among the country’s youth.

Following legal challenges, including a defamation conviction, Sonko couldn’t contest the March 24th election. However, he threw his support behind his deputy, Faye, rallying supporters under the banner “Diomaye is Sonko.” This strategic move paid off, with Faye winning the first round, securing over 54% of the vote.

The inauguration of the new president on Tuesday marked a historic moment for Senegal. The 44-year-old Bassirou Diomaye Faye became the youngest president in the nation’s history. He is also one of the youngest in Africa, despite never having held elected office before.

In his acceptance speech, Sonko pledged to collaborate closely with Faye, promising to present a comprehensive list of ministerial appointments for Faye’s approval, highlighting their shared commitment to governance. “I understand the importance of the trust he (President Faye) has placed in me,” Sonko added.

Their political journey, fraught with challenges, began amidst adversity, with both Diomaye and Sonko detained until just ten days before the presidential election. Their release, part of a group of political detainees granted amnesty by President Sall, came after his attempt to delay the vote, adding further drama to their rise to power.
