The former Malian head of state, Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, overthrown in August 2020 by soldiers, died on Sunday January 16, 2022, at his home in Bamako, his family said.

Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta died at the age of 76, a year and a half after being overthrown by the soldiers who today defy part of the international community.

The presidency of M. Keita has largely coincided with the turmoil in which Mali has been caught since the previous year.

He was overthrown by the military on August 18, 2020. The junta currently in power invokes the evils accumulated during this period to plan to continue to lead the country for several more years.

“President IBK died this morning at 09:00 (GMT) at his home” in the capital, where he lived, a family member told AFP.

Several members of his family confirmed the information. However, the cause of his death has not yet been specified.

Malian public television also announced in a banner that a funeral program would be announced “later”.
